Obesity is a serious problem for a third of all dogs and cats in Great Britain. This was reported by the section animals insurance of Sainsbury Bank. They estimated that around 2,7 million dogs and 2,8 million cats suffer from obesity.
Most of the physiotherapists for animals think that obesity is the main health problem for dogs. The problems are caused by too little exercise and too much feeding.
Claire Moyles, manager at Sainsbury Animal Insurance, says: ‘Many pet owners spoil their pets with food and snacks which are meant for human consumption. They should realise how bad this can be for the health of their beloved pet. Snacks such as chocolate not only lead to obesity, but when they are consumed in large quantity, they may also have a negative effect on the heart and the pancreas of the animals. Overfed, obese animals often have diabetes, osteoarthritis and other complaints, for which they have to remain under long-lasting veterinary supervision. The life expectancy of the animals can also be dramatically shortened. Pet owners who care about the weight and health of their pet, should choose balanced feed produced from, if possible, organic ingredients and which does not contain any additives and preservatives.
