The year 2008 has been declared by zoos as year of the frog. This is part of the yearly campaign of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) to get attention for a specific issue.
Many species that can be seen in zoos are being threatened in the wild. When people who visit zoos see how special these animals are, they will become more involved in these animals in the wild. Zoo animals are therefore ambassadors for the members of their species living in the wild. Due to global warming, many amphibians such as frogs, toads and salamanders can get into problems. In their habitat a deadly fungus may strike, which threatens these species with extinction. In 2008, these problems will be pointed out. The international year of the frog started on December 31st of 2007. In the Netherlands the year of the frog will officially start on the 30th of January with the launching of the Amphibian Action.
All the Dutch NVD zoos are a member of the EAZA and support this campaign.
