The trade in wildlife

Regulating the trade in wild life fails. Despite of knowledge about the problem and despite world trade agreements, an increasing number of plants and animals are threatened with extinction.
A deeper insight into the problem seems necessary. This book offers a critical look on the trading rules, how these rules are checked and, more often, ignored. By investigating several case studies and comparing the trade to other illegal trades (such as the wood trade, the drug trade and the trade in antiques) the weak spots of the system are being revealed. It also shows how nature conservation can be helped by trade agreements, in stead of being undermined by them.

The first part of the book offers background information. In the second part, the different trade agreements are being discussed. The case studies are treated in the third part and deal with bushmeat, elephants and crocodiles. In part four, a comparison is made with other illegal trades. The book closes with a chapter of conclusions and recommendations.
