All of the Seba's short-tailed bats at Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem (Netherlands) have now had their annual check-up. The bats live in the Adventure Tunnel between the Bush (an enclosed rainforest) and Desert eco-displays. Once a year all of the animals are caught and examined.
This bat count allows the caretakers and biologists to keep an eye on – and, if need be, adjust – the natural ratio of males to females: too many males in the group can cause stress for the females. This year’s count revealed 69 males and 65 females, so 19 males will soon join a bachelors’ group of 40 males in the Bush.
