As chinchillas are herbivores, their diet consists of a lot of fiber. However, most food at hand, is not very rich in nutrients. Therefore, chinchillas living in captivity should always be provided with special chinchilla pellets, with fresh and good quality hey (in a rack to prevent in from getting dirty), and with clean water.
Besides this base diet, chinchillas can be fed treats, but only in small quantities, because the animals are very sensitive to food related diarrhoea. Raisins are very popular, but they can only have two a day. Apple can be fed once a week and only one sixth. Carrot also one sixth. Dandelion, shepherd’s purse and dried fruit in small quantities. Dry coconut should be avoided as it swells in the stomach (when it comes into contact with liquids). Nuts and sunflower seeds should be avoided due to the high levels of fat. Fruits that have stones, such as plums and cherries, should not be given to chinchillas, as the stones may be poisonous.
