Essentials of Disease in Wild Animals

The relationship between wild animals, domesticated animals and humans in regards to disease and health is receiving a great deal of attention. Disease in humans and domesticated animals is related to disease in wild animals; animal disease can have an effect on nature conservation.
This book offers a general introduction to pathology, with chapters on topics such as what disease is, causes of disease, and how diseases are described and diagnosed. Explanations are given of terms such as virulence, pathogenicity, resistance, and disease transmission. Not only infectious diseases are covered, but also those caused by incorrect nutrition and toxins. The effects of disease on both individual animals and animal populations are described. There is also a chapter on diseases (zoonoses) that wild and domesticated animals have in common with humans.

The book does not pretend to be a reference work on pathophysiology, yet it offers both an overview of diseases occurring in wild animals and a bit of insight into the complexity of illness and health.

This book is of interest for veterinary and human health professionals, ecologists and population biologists.
