Sharks can live much longer than we had thought. With the aid of a new research technique, the male white shark has been found to live longer than 70 years. That is three times the age previous thought possible.
Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), in the American state of Massachussetts, investigated sharks in the Atlantic Ocean. Among other data, researchers examined material produced until 1964 in nuclear testing by the United States and the Soviet Union. According to the WHOI team, we believe we know a great deal about sharks, but much is based on opinion alone. In scientific terms, knowledge about these fish has just begun to accumulate. So far, this knowledge concerns shark nutrition, habitat and longevity.
