The Japanese minister Soichi Nakagawa has been elected minister of Agriculture during the far-reaching cabinet changes.
Nakagawa is from the agricultural province Hokkaido and is, at age 52, one of the youngest members of the cabinet. He is known as an international negotiator who does not quickly give in.

It is expected that with his appointment no far reaching reforms lie ahead. Nakagawa is seen as a man with experience, who is to turn the ship around within the WTO. Japan is namely forced into its defences, as none of the larger members wants to prevent the establishing of tariff limits.
